Back to School: Making this Semester your Best

School

For those going back to school or just beginning, the countdown till the start of the fall semester has begun.

As a new semester approaches, I’d like to reflect on the school years gone by and share some tips I’ve picked up that’ll hopefully help you hit the ground running this September.

  1. Build solid habits early

Habits are key in determining how you want your semester to go. One may argue that they are one of the most important, if not the most important, part of your semester. Mainly because the habits that you build during the semester are what keep you accountable when no one is watching and when there is little to no motivation. Start small:

  • Attend all your lectures
  • Create a study timetable for each class.
  • Go for office hours.

All of these small habits add up over time. It doesn’t have to be perfect at the beginning, give yourself grace, but just keep pushing and I promise you’ll be happy for it at the end.

  1. Meet with your professors

For the longest time, I was always of the opinion that going to see professors was not that useful and I always shied away from it. But trust me, it’s a cheat code I wish I realized sooner.

Going to see your professors can save you so much time. I realized that professors are eager to assist and help you out with any problems you have. So, build that confidence and go talk to them whether you’re confused or not. It’s also a great way to build connections and become familiar with your professor. Trust me, this could be the difference between getting a B and getting an A.

  1. Create goals and templates for what you want to achieve

Writing down my goals is something that has always helped me in school. At the start of the semester, I would write down all my goals and grades that I wanted to get in each of my classes. I would also write down what it would take and what I’d need to do to get those grades. This helps create a clear path to follow, making it easier to stay on track.

Conclusion and Final thoughts

With all the hard work you’ll be putting in, don’t forget to rest and recharge. College is more than just academics, and burnout is real. Surround yourself with friends who push you toward your goals but also remind you to step away from the books occasionally.

Outside of classes, there are tons of opportunities to volunteer, make friends, and get involved on campus. This includes, of course, hosting or joining in on YCR events on your campus (or getting involved with YCR in other ways)!

In conclusion, don’t panic. You’re not going to have everything figured or planned out immediately – I know I didn’t. Enjoy and try to make the most of your post-secondary experience. You’ve got this and I know you’ll have great semester.
