Canada Day is HERE and the team at YCR wants to send a special shoutout and thank you to the people that fill bellies from sea to sea each and every day: farmers.
Have you ever eaten bread? How about potatoes? Ever drank a beer, or even a glass of milk? If so, there’s a pretty good chance you were consuming Canadian-made products and ingredients. Much of the grain, fruits and vegetables, livestock, and dairy consumed across Canada is produced domestically on one of the country’s 153 million acres of farmland.
For the fresh produce and dairy, the high-quality fish and meat, the hearty grains, and, of course, the ice-cold beer that fills our shelves and fridges, we have Canadian farmers to thank.
As the old adage goes, we’re at all times only 9 missed meals away from complete anarchy. In other words, we wouldn’t be able to survive without the hard work of Canadian farmers and those that work in related sectors.
Farmers and workers across the agriculture and agri-food sectors play a quintessential role in Canada’s economy. The agriculture sector is a major contributor to Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP), and has been a mainstay of our economy for hundreds of years.
To the thousands of farmers and agriculture/agri-food workers across Canada: thank you. Thank you for getting up every morning to get the job done. Thank you for all the sacrifices you make. And thank you for helping to make the Canadian beer many of us will assuredly consume this Canada Day!
And while you’re here: what better day than Canada Day could there be to learn a little more about our country’s agriculture sector?
Here are some quick stats to put things into perspective:
